One of my clients is a 16-year-old boy who plays serious baseball.
Sometimes he comes to me to unlock his tricep so he can pitch comfortably. Every now and then he comes to me for lower back pain. Generally, in those sessions, I find his hips and femurs are twisted and causing the lower back pain.
This week he came in for lower back pain. I started him in a prone position, but his hips and thighs were fairly balanced. After spending 20 minutes on his hip position, I moved up to the lower back and began to palpate. Each time I pulled up along the iliac crest, he flinched at the same place, the insertion of external oblique. I turned him to a supine position and began to work on his abdomen. His right diaphragm muscle was twisted and shortened.
Using SMRT releases, the tension came down by half. Many times when the diaphragm will not fully release, it is because psoas is shortened. The upper fibers of psoas major join with the fibers of the diaphragm.
One by one I released the muscles of the abdominal wall, melting the tenderness in external and internal oblique, and diminishing tension in transversus abdominis.
When the abdominal wall was pliable, I palpated psoas major on both sides. Both sides were tight, but the right was tighter. One 30 second position and the right psoas was supple and pain free. I rechecked the diaphragm, and found it more open as well.
